LOCKNET’s™ Smith a media darling

When the leading Minnesota daily newspaper, the Minneapolis-St. Paul StarTribune, had network security questions they went to La Crosse, WI and contacted LOCKNET™ Senior Security Engineer, Chuck Smith for answers. 

In the May 29, 2008 issue of the StarTribune, an article concerning Comcast Corporations recent hacker attack was published.  The hacker attack brought down the company’s Comcast.net website and it’s web-based email service, which in turn, affected thousands of residents in the Twin Cities.

The attack by two anonymous hackers redirected the internet traffic from Comcast.net and Comcast’s email to an outside website.  After the attack, the Comcast site appeared to be blank and the webmail service remained irregular.  Comcast said it had no evidence that any customer information had been compromised.  

Upon this news, the StarTribune needed an expert’s opinion.  The StarTribune called Chuck Smith of LOCKNET.

Editors from the StarTribune met Smith at the National Microsoft Windows Server 2008 event in the Twin Cities.  Smith’s IT network expertise, knowledge and credentials were more than enough to garner their attention – an exchange of business cards as well as a request for consultations on network and network security issues and Smith was now a StarTribune advisor.

Smith provided insights, thoughts and suggestions for Comcast Corporation. "Two things alarm me. They were able to compromise an administrative-level server at Network Solutions, and were able to change domain name server information. They could have planted malicious software on that server, and whatever information was on the server may have been stolen as well."
